Chipping Sodbury Baptist Church

The mixture of existing building and new Vieo exterior wall cladding provides the perfect marriage between old and new.

The Project

Vieo has demonstrated its suitability for contemporary, traditional and even historical buildings. But at Chipping Sodbury Baptist Church it has combined all of the above to achieve something quite special.

The church was primarily built as a Sunday school in 1886 and is located off the main high street. Working with the client, Clifton-based Wotton Donoghue Architects devised a scheme that united these buildings, creating additional public spaces. To the front of the main building Vieo has been used to add a welcoming new double-height entrance foyer. The pre-existing single storey stone front entrance was retained within the new entrance to create further rooms, whilst maintaining the site’s history.

In a religious context ‘Traditional & Modern' typically refers to the hymnal, however in terms of construction the phrase takes on a different meaning; specifically the blending of old and new architectures to create impressive fa├žades and roofs. It was exactly this approach that led to the choice of Vieo for this Church.

Retaining the ancient and modern theme, VieoZinc takes a technological approach to zinc cladding. Although zinc cladding is relatively expensive and quite soft (similar in both respects to copper and lead) aluminium cladding is easy to work and highly cost effective. VieoZinc 0.9mm uses an aluminium substrate and features a polyurethane coating which is impregnated with a high concentration of zinc particles. This means that it looks and weathers just like zinc, but at about half the price.

The mixture of existing building and new Vieo exterior provide the perfect marriage between old and new.
